Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week 2023, and now is a great time to start the conversation if you haven’t already.
By fostering a culture that supports employee well-being, organizations can reap the benefits of a healthier, happier, and more productive workforce. Through open dialogue, flexible work arrangements, and stress management strategies, we can create an environment where mental health is given the attention it deserves. As we move forward, let us continue to break the stigma surrounding mental health and build workplaces that care about the holistic well-being of their employees.
Some effective strategies to support employee well-being include encouraging open dialogue. It is not easy for everyone, as we are not all as open as we would like, and that’s okay. It can be achieved through training programs that raise awareness and promote non-judgmental attitudes towards mental health challenges. Managers can lead by example by sharing their own experiences and showing empathy towards their team members.
Flexible work arrangements can also help employees manage their work-life balance effectively. As an employee, you also must be considerate towards the goals and culture of the company, but the flexibility allows individuals to take care of their mental health by accommodating personal commitments, reducing commuting stress, and promoting a sense of autonomy and control over their work. However, there is also the danger of individuals being isolated and therefore having the reverse effect, so it is important to trial this and work with one another to see what is best.
Workload and stress management can be monitored by having regular updates to ensure your employees’ workloads are manageable and realistic. We all have goals to hit, so it’s useful to talk to your employees about their progress, and if they are not on track, why do they feel that is? Work together to figure it out. Excessive work pressure and unrealistic deadlines can contribute to burnout and negatively impact mental well-being. Encouraging breaks and injecting light-hearted can all contribute to a healthier work environment.
Finally, do you know what appeals to your employees? Take some time to have a conversation about what you do in your free time to relax. For some, it might be getting outdoors for walks in the fresh air and nature. Others take a holistic approach with yoga, pilates, and meditation, all of which can be very powerful for the mind and body. Others may enjoy a trip to bars/pubs, eating out, gardening, and seeing family. By sharing experiences, you might encourage the other person to think about what they do to unwind.
